Spot Removal Guide

No one likes it when there is a spill on the floor, but with the help of this helpful spotting guide, there is a good chance it can be removed before becoming permanent.

Act Quickly, because most carpet available today has been treated with a stain-resist treatment, so many spills can be removed if immediate action is taken.

The longer the delay, the higher the probability of a spill becoming a permanent stain and remember, staining is influenced by many factors, and no carpet is completely stain proof.

Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white (no printing) paper towels and do not scrub the area because scrubbing can cause pile distortion in the affected area and it may spread the stain wider.

Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels to blot until the area is completely dry.

For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a rounded spoon and all solids should be broken up and vacuumed until completely removed.

Pretest any spot remover in an inconspicuous testing area to make certain the spotting solution will not damage the fiber, dye or backing of the carpet.

After applying several drops to the inconspicuous testing area, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds and examine the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or damage to the carpet.

When any change occurs, immediately rinse the testing area with cold water, blot dry and another cleaning solution should be selected.

Apply a small amount of the selected safe cleaning solution to a white cloth, allow to sit for about 10 minutes and work in gently.

Work from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent the spill from spreading and do not scrub, only blot, absorbing as much as possible, and repeat if necessary.

Continue using the first cleaning solution as long as there is a transfer of the spill to the cloth and be patient because complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times.

After the spill has been completely removed, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed.

Apply a one-half inch layer of white paper towels to the affected area, and weigh down with a flat, heavy object and continue to change paper towels as needed.

There is always some risk in spot removal of damaging the textile, irreversibly altering the stained color, or otherwise 'setting' the stain and this is especially true if using strong chemicals, improper products or procedures.

Avoid overuse of spotting products or overwetting the stain as this may cause it to spread or be absorbed deeper into the carpet pile fibers or fabric.

Harsh rubbing or use of cleaners with optical brighteners will result in variations in color, pile direction, or shading and these changes may remain even after stain removal or following a thorough cleaning.

when your carpet is prone to receiving spots and spills from food or pets, we recommend that you purchase a small spotting machine that can clean and extract the spots immediately.

Many times spot removal fails because the substance and cleaning solution is not rinsed and extracted correctly or the carpet protection (ScotchGard) has worn off and needs to be renewed.

Please follow these spot removal recommendations at your own risk.
